Diana is stuck in a dull marriage and the only lease of life she has is through her books. She’s surrounded by them as she works in a library and is envious of all the lives that she’ll never leave. However, excitement enters her life when a young man called Eddie starts a book club.
Finally Diana has the opportunity to exchange ideas with someone who has the same interests, and these conversations feed the fire in her soul, yet her husband is not happy with all the time she is spending at this book club and a confrontation is imminent.

Diana and Frank were sitting in their front room after having eaten dinner. Frank was in his chair, tapping the end of his pen against the arm of the chair as his brow was furrowed, staring at the crossword. Occasionally he would shift position and the newspaper would rustle, distracting Diana and causing her to glance at him. The world was dark outside as they were in the ghostly depth of the evening, but the light shone on his bald scalp and reflected off, almost giving him a golden halo. His pale t-shirt continually rode up and exposed his swollen belly, so he had to keep adjusting his position to pull it down and as Diana looked at him she was filled with revulsion.
