“Professor Hauser?” The tentative knock reminded me of the time. I had interviews for potential graduate assistants all afternoon. My schedule was insane and I was in desperate need of help; but I loathed graduate students. The overachieving types who usually applied, bored me to tears, and more often than not, I’d rather work alone.
“Come in,” I called with a sigh of irritation. What I’d really enjoy was a really hot young grad student at my beck and call, but there weren’t too many Art History majors that fit that particular fantasy. I was a professor of museum studies, but my background was in the study of important artifacts and architecture of the ancient world — not paintings and sculpture. Most of my students were focused on archeology or various studies of the ancient world; but I was Dean of Art History and unfortunately, most of my applicants, screened by the department, were the more fine-artsy types.
