“Tell me,” Karen said, “all of it, I want to hear all of it.”
Her tone was even, clear. No anger. She asked as if asking for a recipe. Allyson looked down at the table, then her hands, fidgeted with a lock of hair but could not look Karen in the yes. After a moment, Karen slammed the table with her hand and Allyson jumped.
“Tell me, damn it,” she shouted and Allyson started to cry.
“Don’t yell at me,” Allyson blubbered. Karen sat back and looked her over.
“Ally,” Karen said, “you’re my friend.”
“Your best friend,” Allyson corrected her.
“Yes, of course,” Karen said, “my best friend. So, as my best friend, I just want you to tell me. Okay?” Allyson sniffled, wiped her nose with her sleeve and looked across the table at Karen.
