“Man does not live on bread alone,” he said to her, handing her a slice of warm sourdough bread, fresh from the huge, brick oven behind him. “He must have love, he must have art and, he must have this city to call his own.”

“I thought that meant every word comes from the mouth of God,” she said, hesitating before she took the warm slice of bread. He laughed, a loud rumble that was older than he seemed, louder than she thought possible and, it touched her deep inside and made her laugh as well. She caught herself. “I’m not … I’m not laughing at God,” she said quickly. It was important to her that he knew she would never, ever laugh at God.

“Why not,” he asked, earnest, “you don’t think God laughs at you?” She had no response. The God she knew, the God she had been brought up within solemn churches and at Sunday dinners was serious, doing the work…
