With popcorn in hand, Lacey headed from the kitchen into the living room of the apartment she shared with Renee, who already had a tray with sodas, pretzels, and Hershey’s kisses. As she entered the room, Renee was already popping in the DVD they had chosen for the evening, the first time they’d both been home from work and other obligations in over a month.
Lacey was particularly excited as she flopped down on the couch, exhausted from her late hours. She’d been filling in double shifts to cover for another physical therapist who’d had some family issues. Her feet hurt, and so did her back, and she actually moaned at the comfort of lounging on the couch. Renee turned and raised an eyebrow at her, giggling softly.
Sure her roommate was also thrilled to be home, Lacey smiled back. Renee had landed a job as a paralegal and had been putting in her own overtime on a big case with the law firm while still handling her classes at law school. They’d won the case, and her boss had given her three days off.
