Even in the bar, Alina could hear the circus music playing, the bright cheery sounds, the far-away roar of the crowd. She slumped over the bar, staring morosely at her rum and coke. To her right, her two companions did the same.
“Geez,” groused Mikhail, who was right beside her, “I don’t even know what got in the old hag’s breakfast this morning. We didn’t do anything.”
On the other side of Mikhail, James snorted. “We didn’t do anything. That’s the problem.”
Alina sighed. “It’s not our fault we were late to get in costume. If we hadn’t been distracted by Little Miss Prima Donna, we’d have been fine.”
“Ugh,” said Mikhail feelingly, downing most of his whiskey. “She had zero talent. She wasn’t even pretty. Our new dancers should be pretty.”
