Rebecca stopped by the mailbox on her way to her car. She leafed through the usual fall greetings. The mail was as predictable as the season. Various schools were holding carnivals, other neighborhood organizations were conducting food drives and, of course, the usual sprinkle of greetings from the alumni association.
She didn’t know why the schools would continue to ask her every quarter for a donation. It was as if they hadn’t realized that she was behind on her student loans and that she was on scholarship and grants for every other moment she spent in academia. Under all of those envelopes was one that appeared to be made of construction paper.
