Jasmine heard the sound of the door and sat up from where she was lying on the sofa. She could hear the voices in the hallway and stood up to move closer to the door of the lounge so that she could listen. As far as she knew her mother wasn’t expecting any guests to turn up at their boarding house, but she wondered if someone might have dropped in on the chance that there were rooms available. There certainly were as no guests had stayed at the place in the last week. As she got right up to the door she could finally hear the voices.
“… and it is thirty dollars a night if you want a double bed,” her mother said.
“Yeah, sure,” a deep voice said. “I’ll take a room with a double bed for tonight and the next couple of nights if that is OK with you.”
