Member-only story
Alone but not lonely, happy to be by herself, in her daily ritual, sheltered and secluded from the outside world, Emily lived happily. One day, a letter arrived that could either disrupt her life or fill it with love. What will the envelope contain?

In the mornings, before the sun creeps with rose fingers into her rooms, her hand, pale and slim, reaches out from under covers and clicks on a bedside lamp. The same hand then pulls a pair of reading glasses off the bedside table and vanishes beneath the covers for a moment.
The hand again appears and this time, it retrieves the book that waits patiently to be lifted, opened and read. She comes up slowly from beneath the covers, the warmth of a night’s sleep seeping out and into the room. Her eyes adjust. She yawns, pulls herself into a seated position, legs crossed, head bent over the page and begins to read.
After an hour of reading the sun has, by then, fully entered and made itself comfortable in her room. She rises, stretches and moves to the kitchen, still carrying the book, still reading as she walks, her feet knowing the way. The floors familiar to her tread in the house where she grew up, inherited when her parents passed and has lived in, worked in, hidden in, for over twenty-seven years.
