The last summer days rolled by with cloudless skies and a slight, balmy sea breeze. Nikki sat alone at the ice cream shop along the cobblestone path, enjoying her salted caramel sundae as she watched tourists like herself strolling down toward the beach. They too were making the most of what was left of the vacation season, enjoying the sun and sand before the chill of autumn took hold.
In a way, Nikki felt sorry for herself that she was on vacation alone. No best friend, no girlfriends, no lover, no family with her . . . but then again, she’d chosen this.
