Tessa lives happily with her father and mother at the lighthouse. Her father tends the tower and she fills her days with quiet delving into books and the workings of the great lens. One day, her life changes and she suddenly feels the emotions of a woman.

My father was the keeper of the lighthouse on Little Neck Rock. He had been so for the better part of his life. After being wounded in the war, the department of the Navy offered him the position which included a fine house and a good salary. My mother, completely in love with him, said she would follow him anywhere and so, he took the job.
Because the lighthouse was set at the end of a path that led down from the house, my father did not have to spend months away from us and we could go visit him any time we wished. He would look after the light, the lenses, radio ships during storms and keep a log of activity around Little Neck Rock.
The work was pleasant for him, a man who joyed in detail and precision. It was neither too strenuous nor so mentally taxing that he was unable to spend time with my mother at home reading, writing and making her laugh, which he did readily and easily.
