Vanessa woke up with a start, disoriented and uncertain of where she was or how she had ended up there. Opening her eyes, she stared out through the window, conscious of another body in the bed next to her without being able to see it. The room was both familiar and strange, and for a moment, her mind still foggy, Vanessa tried to figure out where she was. As she woke up gradually, she realized that she was completely naked; the fact startled her somewhat, and for a panicked moment she racked her brain, trying to remember — to know whether she should be upset or not with what had happened.
She turned onto her back and looked in the direction of the other person who she sensed in the bed with her; the sight of him made Vanessa suppress a groan with difficulty.
